August 7, 2003

Last month we received an email from Robert Slanger, a Monolithic Dome Workshop graduate. He attached these two photographs of his finished EcoShell. The content of the email follows:

Subject: My First Dome

I first attended your dome buildings class in May of 1994. Since then, I have acquired property and equipment. It took me 5 weeks to complete the shell as a one or two man operation. I finished in April this year. My 11 and 13 year old daughters helped with filling pails, screening sand, and pouring cement into the AP-1500 pump's hopper. I sprayed shotcrete and loaded the cement mixer. There were multiple, compounding mistakes/problems in this construction project. I think I invented some new mistakes. I have attached two JPEG photos of my 30' dome. The shell is twice as thick as planned. That was due to starting out to build an EcoShell I and then building an EcoShell II. The rebar also was not placed close enough to the airform.

In any case, I love it! As you can see, there is plenty of room. I can fit a Suburban and an F150 with room to open the car doors. I have deemed this as a winter sport for southcentral Texas. I intend to build another this fall. Thanks for all your support!

Sincerely,

Robert Slanger
