Sofie's Sake-- Webmaster's Friend in Need of Some AssistanceMarch 10, 2005 by Rebecca South Hello Everyone,
I started working for my Father, David B. South, in 1999. At the time I lived in Salt Lake City with my daughter, Hannah. We lived in an old house which was divided up into 3 apartments. Cristina and her 2 sons moved into the apartment above ours in 2000. We became instant friends and bonded over such calamities as her disposal dumping into our bathtub. She is a very hardworking single mother and I have a lot of respect for her honesty, integrity and unconditional friendship. She has always put her children first in her life and gets so much joy out of their everyday antics. I have never seen a mother act with such grace in the face of her boys' disasters... like the time they poured cheerios all over the living room carpet and then added a gallon of milk. In 2003 Hannah and I had moved to Texas to live at the MDI Headquarters and focus more on work. Cristina called me one day to tell me the surprising news that she was pregnant! She knew she'd be raising the baby on her own, but she was undaunted and excited at the prospect of a little girl. She gave birth to Sofie on Junie 17, 2004 The first year of Sofie's life was fun. The affable little girl made everyone smile. But it was soon apparent that there was something wrong. Eventually Sofie was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms-- a little understood affliction. Doctors don't know why she has them, they don't really know how to stop them, and they have no idea if she'll grow out of them. In the meantime her development has been severely hampered. She's encroaching quickly on the two-year mark and still does not talk or walk. Luckily she can still smile! During this time, Cristina has been unable to work due to the constant care and attention Sofie requires. She has incurred a large amount of debt and is never sure how she'll pay the rent. This is a big change for a woman who has always had steady income. Years ago I enacted my own "No Side Projects" rule, in an effort to stay focused on Monolithic, but I made an exception this time. Cristina and I have just finished a website which we hope can help her and her little family out. Click Here to go to: www.SofiesSake.com.
