South Industries Builds Florida's Second Monolithic Dome Schoolby Spring McGiffin The Children's Reading Center (CRC) of Palatka, Florida is a charter school whose goals include assisting children struggling with reading, increasing teacher training and providing parental support. CRC is owned by a nonprofit corporation that will also own the new Monolithic Dome facility, now being constructed by South Industries, Inc. of Menan, Idaho. For more than three years, CRC has been working to establish new housing for its charter school that would support its goals of child learning and teacher training. They wanted a structure that was disaster-resistant and safe for the children as well as ideal for education. Because of their shape and the materials used in their construction, Monolithic Domes met those expectations. In addition, a Monolithic Dome's design flexibility allowed CRC to have the layout of their dreams: a central library surrounded by classrooms and bathrooms. The dome's large, free-span space means that room configuration can be easily changed, just by moving the interior walls. This will enable CRC to grow according to their changing needs.
The architect for this project is Jesse Harris of LPDJ, a certified architect with 27 years of experience working on projects around the world.
Under the supervision of Derek South, construction on CRC's five domes began this February. Work has gone smoothly, and on April 2 the 132-foot dome was completed. On April 4, the Airform for the 75-foot dome was inflated. For additional information on the CRC project visit:
