Xanadu of Sedona Continues Attracting Attention

An eye-catching sight

The Arizona Department of Transportation says that State Highway 179, leading into Sedona, “carries millions of tourists each year through one of the most pristine and unique areas of the world.”

And Xanadu, the home of Nina Joy and Bracken Cherry and their three daughters, is one point of interest those tourists are bound to see. Sitting on 3.63 acres just off Highway 179, Xanadu is a complex of ten beautiful Monolithic Domes, each painted a different, vivid color.

One tourist described it as, “A giant collection of brightly colored, giant Easter Eggs.”

It’s no wonder then that folks stop and ask to be shown the inside as well as the outside of Xanadu.

The domes

Each of Xanadu’s ten connected domes has its own size, shape and feel, and together they encompass a living area of 5865 square feet. High ceilings, skylights and indoor water fountains create an exhilarating ambiance of space, light and nature.

The first dome a tourist is usually shown is thirty feet high and has a spiral staircase leading to a 500-square-foot loft that the Cherrys call their “Health and Healing Room.”

The spacious, 25-foot-high “Great Room Dome” is next. Special features here include three skylights, a sunken sitting/lounging area and a soothing, red rock indoor water fountain.

The “Master Bedroom Suite” consists of three connected domes, two bedrooms and a master bath. That bath has a walk-in, glass block shower, Jacuzzi tub and a six-foot, portal-like window with a view of the courtyard and its fountain and garden.

Another bedroom features a ten-foot bed shaped like a champagne glass directly under a six-foot round skylight – perfect for viewing the spectacular starlight of Sedona’s sky!

The “Entertainment Dome” has state-of-the-art surround sound, a giant screen TV, DVD and stereo equipment. “The Kitchen,” “Formal Dining” and “Home Office Dome” are equally unique.

A rainbow of domes

About those vividly painted domes, Bracken Cherry says, “I know it seems strange to paint your home all of the colors of the rainbow, but we feel so strongly about these Monolithic Structures or Domes, and how safe and secure they are that we decided to finally show the world just how much! And why not really make a statement by using the seven colors of the rainbow. Another reason why we’ve painted Xanadu all the colors of the rainbow is simply for FUN!”

The 2011 Monolithic Dome Tour

More than 700 people visited Xanadu last October, during Monolithic’s Annual Dome Tour. Bracken said that they were kept very busy but they enjoyed every bit of it and plan on doing it again this coming October.

Media attention

Xanadu has been featured on numerous national home shows including “HGTV’s – World’s Most Extreme Homes,” “The Travel Channel’s – Amazing Vacation Homes,” and “MTV’s – Extreme Cribs.”

We at Monolithic certainly hope that all continues.
