Very Small Town; Big Dome Home
Three Monolithic Domes — In addition to their dome-home, the Simmons have a patio dome and a utility dome. Each is 32′ × 12′.
The Simmons’ Dream Dome — Their retirement dome has a 50’ diameter, a height of 30’ and a living area of about 3400 square feet.
Clear skies, trees and fresh air — Because the dome is so well insulated, that fresh, outdoor air must be brought in through an air-to-air heat exchanger to minimize energy loss and a HEPA air filter to take out contaminates.
Good planning — The Simmons opted to have their dream-dome built into a hillside. Each of their dome’s two levels has easy, walk-out access to the outdoors. Inside, an elevator that Charlie designed — not stairs — provides transportation between floors.
A lucky find: Teakwood — Charlie “found” this teak that had been cut in a forest in the Far East decades ago and just laid around, waiting to become a beautiful floor.
Homey and inviting — Margaret and Charlie enjoy their spacious, upper level bedroom.
Eye-catching display — Besides comfort, this relaxing area includes an interesting bottle collection.
Spacious, walk-in shower — Master bathroom has a shower that, because of its super size, requires no curtains or doors.
Guest accommodations — Except for two guest bedrooms and bathrooms, the dome’s lower level is one, huge, uninterrupted area for cooking, dining and entertaining.
Upper level — It’s one, big room for sleeping, cooking, eating, relaxing — whatever.
Gardens and landscaping — Much of it is edible and includes fruits, vegetables and nuts. Terrace gardens yield various berries.
